“It Is My Father’s Oldsmobile! Should I Junk It?”

Car decision.jpgSensing some hesitation and some nostalgic or emotional connections, I am going to take the high road and say keep it! However, here is some information that may help you make the "right" decision.

If the vehicle was handed down to you as a gift or was willed to you, this may be a good opportunity to take a vehicle inventory and see which of your vehicles you really need (assuming you have more than one). I would look at things such as dependability, usability and efficiency.

If you know the repair history of the gift vehicle, compare it to those you presently own. You want a vehicle that spends the majority of its time in your garage, not in a place of repair.

Look at how much you'll use it. If the gift vehicle is a two-door coupe and you haul lumber on a routine basis, this may not be the vehicle for you. But if you just want the car to zip around on weekends, it may be the way to go.

What about efficiency? If it's a gas-guzzler of days gone by, there better be a ton of emotional connections to overcome what you'll feel in the pit in your stomach when you go to gas it up.

And think about the long term! Are parts still available? Can just about any general technician work on it? Are your kids willing to be seen in it?

I'm sure we can come up with arguments for both sides of the coin, but the bottom line is, you are the one that has to make the decision. This is just some food for thought provocation.

Also, consider wether or not there's a payment book in the glove compartment.  If routine maintenance and upkeep would be less than a monthly car payment, then that's a BIG point in keeping the car and ridding yourself of another that may have a fat monthly car payment.
