So What If My Windshield Has a Crack in It?
I recently had the opportunity to assist in a vehicle safety inspection event, and I was amazed at the number of windshields that either had a dimple in them or were cracked and needed replacing. I was talking with one vehicle owner about this, and his comments to me sparked this blog's title. Your windshield is not an item to neglect!
Some motorists truly believe the only functions of the windshield are to guard you from the elements and keep you from getting bugs in your teeth. While those are both true, your windshield's most critical safety role is protecting the vehicle's occupants.
During a vehicle crash, when the front airbags deploy, the airbags actually deflect off the windshield, putting them in the perfect position to receive the occupant. What folks don't realize is that if the windshield is compromised by either a crack or a severe enough dimple it could very easily give way and not aid the airbag in doing its job.
While no one ever plans to get into an accident, you need to make sure the safety devices in your car are able to do their job effectively. Many glass companies will come to your home or place of business to either repair or replace your windshield—in many cases with no insurance penalty or deductible. There are no excuses not to get your windshield repaired.
Better safe than sorry!
