Help! How did you pick your auto insurance provider?

I'm thinking of switching my car insurance provider cause my rates are going up and I  haven't been real happy with my agent.  Any thoughts on how and why you chose your provider?  What was most important to you?  What were you looking for? And did any advertising get you motivated?  Thanks for your thoughts!

When I llived in California, I had Auto Insurance with the Southern California Auto Club (AAA); they underwrote their own insurance and were cheaper than any other company. That was no longer available when I moved to Maryland and I had to switch; State Farm offered the best deal at the lowest cost, I insured both my auto and my house through them, that was in 1980 and I've been with State Farm ever since. Now they are still cheaper than insurance through AAA here in Florida for my auto. Insurance through AAA is higher and they wont insure my manufactured home.

I was referred by a friend of the family

I picked my auto insurance by a referral.  A friend had been using Liberty Mutual for years and had been happy with their policy and service.  Recently, I shopped around for a better rate and found that I was actually getting a better deal with Liberty Mutual, than with Progressive, which was the best price offered when I shopped out my policy with AAA.

How & Why I Chose My Auto Insurance

I shopped online and chose my auto insurance based mainly on price. I checked the companies I see advertised most often (i.e. Geico, Allstate, Progressive, Esurance) as well as "referrals." For example, I'm a AAA member, so I requested quotes through the AAA website, and even if a few of the quotes offered were from companies I had not heard of, I still considered them as possible options.  If the price, length of policy, and policy options were acceptable, I would have gone with the "unknown" referred company because they were suggested by AAA.
