Chocolate Delight!

TopRight.jpgOne of the loveliest places to celebrate Valentine’s Day is Hershey, PA—specifically The Hotel Hershey. My husband and I stayed at this magnificent historic hotel on a 3-day romantic weekend getaway and have never forgotten its Old World elegance and charm.

Styled after a 19th-century Mediterranean resort, The Hotel Hershey sits on top of a hill with manicured gardens and tranquil reflecting pools leading up to its entrance. The Hotel’s interior has grand public spaces, restored wooden balustrades, stained glass, mosaic tiles and bubbling fountains as well as state-of-the-art amenities, luxurious rooms and suites, a world-famous spa and 36 holes of championship golf.

The Hotel was the brainchild of Milton S. Hershey, who perfected a formula for milk chocolate and then built a factory and town for his workers that bear his name. When the Depression began, he was faced with the prospect of either employing his town's construction workers or providing for their welfare. After a trip to Europe, Hershey decided to build an elegant hotel. Over the objections of his friends and family, he began construction on the hotel and retained 800 steelworkers, masons, carpenters, craftsmen and laborers on his payroll to do so. The hotel’s construction began in 1931 and was completed on May 23, 1933.

The Hotel is truly lovely and elegant. We especially enjoyed our dinners and Sunday brunch in the unique Circular Dining Room. The story goes that in his world travels, Milton S. Hershey noticed that guests who did not tip well were placed in the corners of restaurants, so he ordered that his dining room would not have any corners. The Circular Dining Room offers the very finest in gourmet cuisine, impeccable service, and elegant decor including unobstructed views of the Hotel’s beautiful gardens. Many of the wonderful dishes on the menu have chocolate as a special—and surprise—ingredient, and not just the fabulous chocolate-inspired desserts!

And as you might expect, even The Spa at The Hotel Hershey has chocolate inspirations including a Whipped Cocoa Bath, Chocolate Bean Polish and a Chocolate Fondue Wrap. Leave it to Hershey to make chocolate good for your skin too!

If romance isn’t on your mind, the town of Hershey is still a top-rated family vacation destination with a wide array of local attractions including a free ride and tour through the simulated chocolate factory at Hershey’s Chocolate World and thrilling rides at Hershey Park, a family-friendly amusement park. But don’t go to Hershey if you don’t like chocolate! The entire town is a chocolate extravaganza with Hershey Kiss streetlights and the tantalizing scent of chocolate in the air.

So this Valentine’s Day, don’t buy your sweetheart a box of chocolates! Go to the Sweetest Place on Earth instead and indulge!

I have visited Hershey too and it is a delight.  I did not make it to the Spa but a Chocolate Fondue Wrap sounds like heaven...hint to my significant other!
